"Spot Where Anthracite Coal Was First Mined"
According to the 125th anniversary of Carbondale Commemorative Book (1976), this was originally located a hundred feet west of the 7th Avenue railroad crossing on the old West Side of town. This was the first underground mine.

These three churches are in a row. Starting on the right end is St. Rose of Lima R. C. Church on the left. In the middle (shown at the far right) is the First M. E. Church. On the left is the First Presbyterian Church, shown in the middle here.
