Morgan Daniel Reunion

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Wednesday August 24, 1910

Daniels' family reunion will be held at Valley View park on August 25.

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Wednesday, August 31, 1910

Descendants of Morgan Daniels in Northeastern Pennsylvania held their third annual reunion August 25, at Valley View Park, and it proved a most enjoyable gathering in every respect.  Morgan Daniels was a native of Wales, but spent the greater part of his life in Spring Brook, Lackawanna county, and his descendants have had a prominent part in the upbuilding of this section of the state.  They have scattered widely, but the majority of them are residents of the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys.  Pittston and West Pittston number among their many residents many members of the family, including the Davis family, the Owens family, the Lewis family, the Stroh family, and the Holmes family .  These well known families were largely represented at the park, together with many other members of the family from Scranton, Kingston, Plymouth, and the Hazleton section.  Altogether, nearly two hundred persons were in attendance, the youngest member being, Mary Evelyn Atwater, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Atwater, of this city, whose mother, the former Miss Nellie Owens, is a great-grand daughter of the founder of the family in this country.  Some who came long distances to attend the annual family reunion were Rev. John Hopwood, wife and young son, of Honolulu; Lincoln Lewis, wife and sons, William and Lincoln, of Lyon Mountain, N. Y.; Mr. and Mrs. George Heckert, and children, of Harrisburg, and Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, of Harrisburg.

Favored with ideal weather, the people passed a very happy day at the park.  Some were present who had never before attended a reunion of the family, while many of the others had not met since the reunion a year ago, so that day was one for recounting of varied experiences and catching up on current family history.  The committee on arrangements had made ample provision for the comfort of the people and the day passed all too quickly.  Each branch of the family had its own dinner table, and the dinner and supper hours were occasions of great sociability.

During the course of the afternoon, a family meeting was held, with William J. Davies, of Scranton, acting as chairman.  The secretary was D. R. Daniels, of Scranton.  The program was open with prayer by Rev. J. V. Stephens, of Pittston.  Then came a series of addresses that were much enjoyed.  Rev. T. C. Edwards, D. D., of Kingston, a close friend of the family for many years, was especially happy in his remarks which dealt principally with reminiscences of the family.  He dealt especially on the characteristics of Rev. Daniel Daniels, widely known throughout this section as 'Daniels Dundaff' who was a son of Morgan Daniels, and whose work as a pioneer of the gospel among the Welsh people of Susquehanna county was of lasting value.

Rev. John Hopwood was introduced by a member of the family who had come 5,000 miles to attend the reunion.  Mr. Hopwood is a former resident of Plymouth, being a son of Edward Hopwood, a pioneer resident of that town.  A graduate of college and theological seminary and an ordained minister of the Gospel, Mr. Hopwood has for the past seven years been located in the city of Honolulu, capital of the Hawaiian Islands, as chaplain of a very thriving college, which has 350 boarding students.  Mr. Hopwood expressed his great delight at being able to attend a reunion of his family for the first time.  He and his family are spending a years leave of absence in the homeland.

Brief addresses were delivered by Rev. Owen Thomas, pastor of Pilgrim Congregational church, Plymouth, and Rev. Dr. H. H. Harris, pastor of the Edwardsville Baptist church.

Some business was disposed of at the meeting.  It was decided to hold next year's reunion at Valley View Park during the last week of July.  The following officers were elected: president, W. J. Davies, of Scranton; vice-presidents, Edward Hopwood, of Plymouth, and Robert C. Owens, of Pittston; secretary, D. R. Daniels, of Scranton; treasurer, S. D. Stroh, of Pittston.

Announcement was made of the death during the past year of Daniel Lloyd, of Edwardsville, former president of the family association, and a committee was appointed to prepare a suitable resolution to be incorporated in the records of the family.

The meeting was closed with the singing of Welsh and English hymns by the entire audience.
