1910 SCRANTON FAMILY REUNIONS

From The Scranton Tribune-Republican

Allison-Hodgeson Reunion

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Saturday, July 16, 1910

   The Allison-Hodgeson reunion, which was scheduled to be held Friday, July 22, at Herrin's {sic} farm, near Pittston, has been postponed indefinitely.  The death of Thompson Hall of Priceburg, yesterday, caused the postponement.

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Friday, August 12, 1910

   Representatives of the Allison-Hodgeson family will meet with Joseph Hodgeson, in the office of the prothonotary, court house, Wednesday evening next, to arrange a program and fix a date for the families reunion.  The reunion was to have been held a month ago, but a death in the family caused a postponement.

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Tuesday, August 30, 1910

   The committee in charge of the Allison-Hodge {sic} family reunion, which will be held tomorrow on the Herron farm in Duryea, has arranged that all of the members of the families who are to attend the reunion will leave this city on the 9 o'clock Duryea car tomorrow morning.  A wagon will meet the car at the end of the line.

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Thursday, September 1, 1910

     More than 250 members of the Hodgson-Allison family met at the Herron farm in Duryea yesterday in their annual reunion.  The members came from all parts of this county and this part of the state.  There were four generations of the family at the reunion, and everyone present from the youngest to the oldest enjoyed every minute of the day.  There were games and amusements for all - races for boys and girls, ball games for the men, jumping contests and a race for the fat women, in which Mrs. C. A. Perry took the prize in a time that would make many a sprinter put forth his best speed.

     Thomas Allison was elected president of the family reunion organization.  The following committee was in charge of games and contests: Joseph G. Hodgson, of the prothonotary's office; county commissioner Victor Burschel; William Hodgson, and George Wilson. There was a game of baseball between Providence and Dunmore members of the family.  Dunmore won.

     The prizes in the contest were won as follows: Girl's races, Misses Helen Walters, Florence Wagner and Mary Brown; hop, step and jump, William Hodgson, thirty-tree feet; second, Victor Burschel, twenty-nine feet and nine inches; boy's race, F. Perry; hillclimbing contest, Stanton, Perry, and Parfrey; running high jump, W. F. Perry, four feet and ten inches; throwing contest for women, Mrs. Hall, of Priceburg, and Mrs. Allison, of Dunmore; cracker-eating contest; F. Hodgson, first, C. Perry, second; spoon race, Mrs. Burschel, first, Mrs. Allison, second; putting the shot, Brown, first.

     The refreshments served at the reunion were just the kind that 250 happy and healthy men and women and boys and girls of the same big family enjoy.

Black Reunion

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Saturday, September 3, 1910

     The Black family reunion will be held at Lake Henry, Maplewood, Thursday, September 8.

The Scranton Tribune-Republican  Friday, September 16, 1910

      BLACK FAMILY REUNION

     A large number of relatives, constituting what is known to be the Black family, gathered in a reunion at Lake Henry grove on Thursday, Sept. 8.

     There were about two-hundred present.  All seemed to have had an enjoyable time and renewed friendships with many of the relatives. They had not met in years.  Some of those present were from New York, New Jersey, and the different states of the Union.

     In the afternoon a program was rendered as follows: Hymn "My Country 'Tis of Thee", prayer, Rev. J. G. Rosenberger; duet, Misses Alma and Beatrice Black; recitation, George Jackson; duet, Misses Mabel and Isabel Black; history, Mrs. Aaron Black; duet, Mr. and Mrs. Alby Black; address, Rev. J. G. Rosenberger; address, Rev. L. H. Yergery; hymn, "God Be with You 'Til We Met Again"; benediction, Rev. L. H. Yergery.

     The following poem was composed and read by Mrs. Von Storch, of Yonkers, N. Y.:

   THE BLACK REUNION
     Sept. 8, 1911
When we gaze at a garden of beautiful flowers,
  So varied in shape and hue,
We speak of the blossoms, the colors displayed.
  Of the pinks and the violets blue;
Of marigolds yellow and roses so red
  That blend with the lillies white,
Of hyacinths purple and asters, too,
  They all are a source of delight.

But today, here in nature's garden,
  Surrounded by leafy bowers,
We gaze at another collection
  Of various kinds of flowers;
Some are tall like lilac's,
  The sunflowers and hollyhocks,
Others are short like the mignonette
  Or the size of four o'clocks.

But though of different shape and size,
  They wealth of color lack,
And tho' they all delight our eyes,
  We call these flowers "Black".
They've traveled here from many states,
  New York and Jersey, too,
Have sent them to the Keystone state,
  And here they are on view.

They've gathered in a charming bunch,
  Each with a basket of picnic lunch;
Nodding their head to kindred here,
  For many meet only once a year.
Just once in a season these flowers bloom -
  We'll call them "annuals", I presume;
For, once a year on September day
  They meet and pass the time away.

The men indulge in a quiet smoke,
  And merrily laugh at quip or joke;
Old friendships are of course renewed,
  Perhaps a dish of gossip brewed;
Or in the world's affairs they nic
  And air their views on politics.

The women folks together sit,
  Just listen to the flow of wit,
As they indulge in merry chat,
  Perhaps about a new Fall hat
Or of the latest styles from town,
  The pattern of an Autumn gown,
The best recipe for layer cake
  Or how to lightest pastry make.

The tiny buds, the children dear,
  Are also in the garden here,
They are their parents' purest joys,
  A glorious group of girls and boys;
Their number, one can scarcely tell,
  But of young Blacks, we know full well
That here at Maplewood alone
  So numerous have the children grown,
That even in this quiet region
  One possibly could call them legion.

All honor to the tribe of Black,
  May blessings never cease
To fall on their devoted heads,
  Long may the tribe increase;
Such sturdy, honest, rugged men
  Are what out country needs,
Not citizens of talk alone,
  But men of fearless deeds.

All honor to their noble wives,
  Spending each busy day
In laboring for hearth and home,
  Devoted mothers, they,
And worthy helpmates of the men
  In country or in town,
Who by the such faithfullness and love,
  Add jewels to their crown.

Then let us all give "Three times three"
  For this illustrious family,
Hail to the Blacks, both great and small,
  Upon their heads may blessings fall;
And when they seperate today,
  For each and all of them we pray
The watchful care of highest Heaven
  Until they meet in 1911.
