Second Reformed Church, Scranton, Pa.
Formed in December 1912, ended about 1945


At the left is a letter written January 2, 1940, by the second pastor, J. F. B. Griesemer. In part he wrote:
On this the 25th anniversary of the first service held in this edifice, I greet you heartily.

Well do I recall my arrival in Scranton with my wife and two little daughters in November 1914. The services held in the Hartman's Hall are fresh in my memory. In July 1915 the congregation marched in a body from the hall to the newly purchased lot on the corner of Prospect Avenue and Willow Street, where services for the ground-breaking for the Second Reformed Church were held.

Eagerly during the summer months the erection of the building was watched by our people. Contrary to our anticipation, the auditorium was not ready for services according to schedule, so our first services were conducted in the basement, at which time the Junior Mechanics Lodge turned out in a body.

The church was dedicated in January 1916, a deep snow had fallen the night before which interfered with the service. ...

In 2020 there was still a building on the corner of Prospect Avenue and Willow Street that had been a church, but had been modified for other uses.

The church was a member of the General Synod, Reformed Church in the United States. A booklet of the Nineteenth Triennial Session, 1917, is available on Archive.org at THIS LINK. If you do a search for Scranton, you will find the church mentioned. The entry on page 104 is especially of interest, "Rev. Aaron Noll, missionary of our Second Church, Scranton, Pa., died suddenly in July, 1914."
